Choosing a Chinese Name for a Baby Boy

Boy names attract a different kind of advice. It usually pushes toward strong-sounding characters and grand meanings. That works for some surnames and fails badly for others, because a name is a sound before it is a meaning.

The surname decides what the name can carry

A one-syllable surname with a falling tone can support a strong given name. A surname that already sounds soft can make the same characters feel forced.

Test the combination aloud. If it sounds like a slogan, it is too much.

Strength does not come from big words

Characters meaning mountain, dragon or victory are common because they read as strong. They also date a name to a particular era of naming fashion.

Strength in a name usually comes from balance, not from volume.

Characters that are overused

A few characters dominate each generation. They are not wrong, but a name built entirely from them will share the classroom with three others.

Check how common each character is before committing. One common character plus one distinctive character usually reads better than two common ones.

Tone and rhythm

Two falling tones in a row sound heavy. Two flat tones sound even. A name with a change of tone is easier to call across a room.

If the family will use a nickname, check that the nickname keeps the rhythm rather than flattening it.

Dialect check

Grandparents may use a dialect every day. A name that is crisp in Mandarin can collapse into a single sound in Cantonese, or pick up an unwanted homophone in Hokkien.

Say it in both before deciding. This step is often skipped and later regretted.

Writing it

Check the character structure. Two dense characters next to each other are hard to write and look heavy in a signature. A dense character beside a simple one reads better.

Write the full name ten times by hand. The name should still feel natural at the tenth.

The surname-first process

Shortlist five names. Pair each with the surname, say it aloud, write it by hand, and check it in the family dialect. Then leave the list for a week.

What survives is usually a name that sounds right before it means anything, which is how names are actually heard.
